Nepal is a paradise for bird enthusiasts, home to over 850 species, including the national bird Danphe (Impeyan Pheasant). Our accessible bird watching tour in Nepal takes you to prime locations like Chitwan National Park, Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve and Phulchowki Hill, offering sightings of exotic and migratory species.

While in the higher Himalayan regions numerous species of birds of prey can be found, national parks like Chitwan in the lowlands harbor a wide variety of birds as well. Also, the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve in the far east of Nepal hold an incredible variety of both resident and migratory birds. Our birdwatching tour takes bird and nature enthusiasts through the national park Chitwan, the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve and the Phulchowki mountain. Throughout our tour you will be accompanied by one of Nepal’s foremost bird guides.

Did you know? Nepal’s national bird is the lophophorous, Impeyen Pheasant, locally called Danphe, which is found in the Himalayan region.

In the higher Himalayan regions are found the raptors and birds of prey of which there are numerous species. The various national parks like Chitwan and Bardiya harbor a wide variety of birds. But Koshi Tappu has better sightings of an incredible variety of both resident and migratory birds that come from as far away as Siberia. Nepal’s national bird is the Lophophorous, Impeyen Pheasant locally called Danphe which is found in the Himalayan region. Bird watching trips are organized by most resorts and are accompanied by experienced naturalists.

Koshi Tappu is situated in the far eastern corner of Nepal, close to the country’s southern border with India. Which is Asia’s finest wetland sites, a combination of scrub grasslands and riverine forests, and home to 31 mammals and 485 bird species. 20 species of duck, ibises, storks, swamp partridges, herons, egrets above many other exotic and migratory waterfowl not found elsewhere in Nepal live there. It is also shelter to 13 out of 22 of Nepal’s nearly threatened bird species.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu

Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, our representative will greet you and help arrange your transfer to a hotel in Kathmandu that accommodates wheelchairs. Allow yourself time to recover and rest after your trip. Later you can explore Thamel, a lively tourist area in Kathmandu famous for its handicraft stores, cafés, and local artwork. The majority of stores feature accessible entrances.

Day 02: Shivapuri Watershed and Wildlife Reserve and Nagarjuna Danda

Explore the tranquil Shivapuri Watershed, a protected zone featuring accessible paths and rich biodiversity. This area is perfect for peaceful strolls, observing birds, and enjoying the refreshing mountain air.  Next, visit Nagarjuna Danda, a historic hill offering panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley. Accessible routes enable birdwatching and photography. For those interested, small monasteries and meditation centers in the area often feature ramps or flat pathways, making them accessible for wheelchair users.

Day 03: Chitwan National Park

Discover the wonders of Chitwan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its abundant wildlife and varied bird species. Discover the park at ease in a wheelchair-friendly vehicle and take pleasure in a mild nature stroll, ideal for watching forest birds like kingfishers, hornbills, and drongos in their natural surroundings. End the day with an interesting evening session that showcases Chitwan’s distinctive ecosystem and the extraordinary avian species that contribute to the park’s uniqueness.

Day 04 & 05: Boat trip on Rapti River and Jeep Safari

In the morning, you will experience a boat ride on the Rapti River in an accessible boat with ramps, while watching waterbirds like storks, herons, and river terns, along with migratory species in their natural surroundings. Later, embark on a jeep safari to explore Chitwan’s grasslands and forest interiors, where you may spot rhinos, wild elephants, sloth bears, and a variety of jungle birds such as parakeets, cuckoos, and raptors.

Evening Activities: Delight in optional nature walks at dusk or partake in Tharu cultural programs that offer accessible seating, including traditional village tours and vibrant dance shows.

Day 06: Journey to Kosi Tappu Wildlife Reserve

A visit to Kosi Tappu Wildlife Reserve provides a tranquil retreat into the eastern wetlands of Nepal, where the expansive Koshi River carves out calm vistas of grasslands and glistening marshes. The reserve, which houses the rare wild water buffalo and hundreds of bird species, exudes a tranquil and pristine ambiance, making it ideal for quiet exploration, birdwatching, and leisurely river rides. In this locale, nature unfolds at a leisurely pace, beckoning you to halt for a moment, take a breath, and reestablish your connection with the Terai’s splendor.

Day 07 to 09: Birwatching in Koshi Camp

The morning mist at Koshi Camp created an ideal environment for birdwatching. With binoculars in hand, you will observe kingfishers, herons, and a magnificent flock of bar-headed geese flying above. Bird calls resonated through the wetlands, while the far-off Himalayan foothills added a touch of magic to the scene. A tranquil day, surrounded by the serene marvels of nature.

Day 10: Flight to Kathmandu and City Exploration

Today you will return to the capital city,  Kathmandu, on a morning flight, and the instant we landed, we were met by the city’s vibrant buzz. Whether it was meandering through narrow alleys, visiting historic plazas, checking out temples, or browsing local markets, every turn revealed vibrant sights, cultural richness, and vitality. Kathmandu was endlessly fascinating due to the blend of tradition and modern life.

Day 11: Bird Watching in Phulchowki Hill

The morning air on Phulchowki Hill was rejuvenating and filled with the sounds of birds. Even though trekking through lush woodlands, you will observe vibrant sunbirds, laughingthrushes, and other birds of the Himalayas darting among the trees. The tranquil paths and stunning vistas created an ideal day for those who love nature and birds.

Day 12: Kathmandu Durbar Square or another day at Phulchowki Hill

The heart of Kathmandu came alive at Durbar Square. Ancient palaces, intricately sculpted temples, and lively streets provided a glimpse into the rich history and vibrant culture of Nepal. Every corner recounted tales, spanning from royal legends to the rhythms of daily life.

Returning to Phulchowki Hill, the wooded pathways revealed additional feathered treasures. We observed rare Himalayan birds and relished the tranquility of misty mornings, enveloped by verdant foliage and the soft sounds of nature.

Day 13: Departure
